About Me

My name is Ann, and I live in Hendersonville, Tennessee. I am a certified tutor in the Barton Reading & Spelling System, and I am excited to share the help that this program brings to students of all ages!

How My Dyslexia Journey Began

I didn’t start as a dyslexia specialist. I graduated from college with my certification in Speech and Language Pathology and Elementary Education. I worked as a Speech and Language Therapist for many years before having six children of my own.

When my firstborn began showing signs of dyslexia, I quit my job to spend the next several years homeschooling. There were no programs for children with dyslexia in my state at the time, so I used what I knew from my speech background to teach reading. It was a long and challenging process! Being the parent of a child with dyslexia is not an easy task. You want to see them succeed and finding the path to fulfillment and education is full of twists and turns, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Years later, with grandchildren arriving, I began to study the latest research on dyslexia, knowing it runs in families. I got certified in the Barton Reading and Spelling System and trained in the Lips program and began to tutor my grandchildren and others. I am delighted and amazed at the progress my grandchildren and students are making using the Barton System. (I use the LiPS program to get them ready for the Barton System.) My oldest grandchild is in book eight out of ten and is currently a straight “A” student.  My only regret is that I wish this program would have been available when I was working with my children!

I share this story because I want you to see that there truly is help for people with dyslexia. They can be taught to read and spell fluently and accurately. They just need to be taught using the research based Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Method.
